Creating a warm and cozy space to come home to every day is extra important during those dark winter nights. It’s all about the little touches – throw pillows, fluffy blankets, soft lighting, flickering candles. These are the things that really make a home feel like a sanctuary away from the cold, winter scenes just outside your window.

Hygge – pronounced “hoo-ga” – is a Danish word that has become increasingly popular over recent years. Now there’s no real English translation of this word, but it describes a moment that creates a feeling of coziness, contentment and well-being. It’s the little things like laughing with friends over good food, or reading a book by the fire.

Sounds like perfection, right? Well, here are some ways we think might help you create that hygge atmosphere in your home this winter.

Create a Glow with Warm Lighting

Like we said earlier, hygge is all about the simple things in life! Grabbing your favorite mug and filling it with some lovely hot cocoa is one of the best ways to fill your heart with joy. Wrapping our hands around a jumbo mug and sitting in front of the fire is a guaranteed way to give us those hygge feels.

Just taking time out to do things you enjoy is an important factor to achieving hygge. For us, that means reading a good book! Curl up in a lovely big armchair with your favorite blanket and just dive into that book that’s been gathering dust on your shelf. It’s the perfect way to bring about a sense of wellbeing!

Pillows and throws will help create a comfortable atmosphere that will invite you to relax and read a book in a your cozy little sanctuary. Think about layering textures in your space – mix fluffy wools with tapestries, canvas and suede. Doing this will add another dimension to your room, making it more interesting and therefore encouraging you to return time and again.
